The Romantic Beauty of Water in the Autumn Garden
Water is beautiful in the garden at all times of the year. It doesn't have to be summer to sit outside and enjoy your water feature. There is a special romance of water in the autumn garden.
Even if it’s too late in the year for a suntan, you can still sit outside in a sweater and listen to the water while relaxing or reading a book.
There are lots of types of water feature to choose from. There are ponds, fountains, river beds, and even water chains that substitute for a gutter downspout.
There is real peer-reviewed research that listening to water is good for your health.
Some types of water features may need to be shut off during the winter, but that’s unlikely in southern British Columbia where the weather for greater Vancouver is equivalent to a Plant Hardiness Garden Zone 8.
Give some thought to what type of water feature interests you. If you want fish, then ponds need some depth, which can be a hazard for small children or pets. But water features don’t have to be deep in order to have circulating water movement and the sound of water flowing.
One of the big benefits of a water feature is that you can plant water-loving plants, which wouldn’t necessarily thrive otherwise. Plants that like humidity and wet feet like some types of irises will love your water feature.
And there are also plants that can live in the water or floating on the top, like water lilies.
And remember, you can have some color in the autumn garden. There are late bloomers like some types of daylilies (Hemerocallis), witch hazel, and many plants have berries that are visible in the winter (and that feed the birds.)
Water features are our business, and we can design and install them even in the dead of winter, as long as the ground isn’t frozen solid. If you’d like to listen to some water in your backyard, while you’re sipping on some hot cocoa, contact us.
